As you can probably tell by my username, I'm Jewish. I'm not a fanatic and I don't believe in Israel's absolute perfection and superiority. I want the Palestinians to be free and to have their own state.

This is just a very general question: How does this community feel about Israel's civil liberites record in comparison to Syria's? Egypt's? Iran's? I'd love to see an in-depth comparison of freedom of the press, religion, and sexual preference, among others. Israel has many faults and has contributed a great deal to the mess in the region today, but it is also subject to grossly disproportionate condemnation. Ironically enough, this is partially due to Israel's free and very critical press and just Supreme Court, which, citing human rights, frequently bars the IDF from doing what it feels is in Israel's best interest. Arab women can vote in Israel, but not in Saudi Arabia.

I do not hear those who rally against Israel (on a human rights platform) and its Jewish identity complaining about the Muslim identity in the score of nations surrounding it, or the serious deficiency of human rights in those places.

I do not hear those who rally against Israel conceding that both sides have been guilty of collective punishment, or defining suicide bombing as such.

I do not hear those who rally against Israel admitting that Arafat's goal was not freedom or peace for his people, or that he could've done more to realize their interests.

I completly understand how some of Israel's qualities and actions are abhorrent to many people, but I simply don't see them caring about Arab Muslims who are or have been persecuted by their own governemnts (including the Palestinian Authority under Arafat).

Note: I understand how it feels to called Anti-Semitic when all you are being is Anti-Zionist. I'm sure this community is not an Anti-Semitic one. But beware of forcing a double (triple?) standard on the Jewish State, lest you be misunderstood. If you believe in human rights and the seperation of church and state and the absence of religious descrimiation, one way to be taken seriously about Israel is to apply the same standard to all nations.

thank you for clearing that up for people; however, if a person is anti zionist or pro palestinian, it is the same thing as saying that palestinian terrorism is right. that, in itself, is anti semitic, because it is supporting the murder of jews (israel is a jewish state, remember??)
